While on the set of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, we talked with star Chris Pratt about the making of the galactic sequel.

During our sit down roundtable interview, Pratt talks about growing up loving Kurt Russell to acting alongside him in this film, asking him to be his dad in real life, the complicated relationship between Peter Quill and his father Ego, the evolution of Peter Quill, the result of having held an infinity stone, the music in the Awesome Mix volume 2, his relationship with Yondu, acting alongside the music which is played on set, making a more emotional film, Peter and Gamora’s will-they-won’t-they relationship, his new relationship with Mantis, the meaning behind the words on his t-shirt in the film, and much more. Read our entire Chris Pratt Guardians 2 interview now after the jump.

How cool is it that Kurt Russell is your dad?

Chris Pratt: It’s so cool. It’s so cool. It’s perfect.

What’s it like working with him?

For me, there are actors that I loved growing up – there’s a handful of them – and he is absolutely right at the top of that list, and has not once done anything to disappoint the inner child in me who was so excited when he got cast. He’s really cool. He’s absolutely an artist. Even though he’s kind of the ‘everyman’ kind of a character, he’s really an artist and he really cares deeply about all of the details of his character. We’re really kindred spirits I think. Me and Anna [Faris], and Kurt and Goldie [Hawn], I feel like we are the same in some parallel universe, you know what I mean? Anna’s often times been compared to Goldie Hawn, like in the House Bunny and things like that, and one of our favorite movies is Overboard. And I guess some people have made that comparison with me and Kurt, just kind of like a blue-collar type of dude, American actor. He loves to hunt and be outdoors and he’s, I don’t know, I just really, really love him. I’m in love with Kurt Russell. [Laughs]

How did Chris Pratt – God-fearing hunting enthusiast and former ‘fat guy’ – become a billion-dollar box office sensation? Celia Walden meets him

There’s the smallest of pauses before Chris Pratt confirms that he once worked as a daytime stripper. “It was actually pretty fun,” grins the actor. “I was an exhibitionist as a kid – always naked – so at 18 I announced I was going to be a stripper.

“I went for an interview, or an audition? Whatever it is strippers do. I submitted my resumé,” he gestures elegantly down at his crotch. “And they gave me the job. I did a couple of parties, then this one gal’s 40th when the men suddenly came home early and I had to grab my s___ and jump over the fence… And that was pretty much it. But I did OK. I made a couple of hundred bucks.”

All things considered, I think Pratt was wise to move on to a (mostly) clothed profession. After all, in August he was the youngest entry in Forbes’s annual list of highest-earning Hollywood actors (having made an estimated $26 million). He’s the leading actor in two of the biggest movie franchises out there (Jurassic World and Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy), one of Time Magazine’s “most influential people in the world”, and in 2015 his films made $1.7 billion at the global box office (his 2014 total: $1.2 billion).

And now he’s about to star in one of the most hotly anticipated films of the year: Passengers. But if he ever has to go back to the day job, I know a couple of girls looking for birthday entertainment.

Chris Pratt’s charisma and screen presence stand out even amid six other magnetic actors in “The Magnificent Seven,” Antoine Fuqua’s remake of the ’60s classic western.

This time around, the magnificent leads are played by a diverse cast: Chris, Denzel Washington, Vincent D’Onofrio, Lee Byung-hun, Ethan Hawke, Manuel Garcia-Rulfo and Martin Sensmeier. Haley Bennett joins the seven gunfighters defend a peasant village.

Chris was fun and humorous as usual in our recent chat:

Your character Josh Faraday seems to be a man who almost has nothing to lose. How much do you relate to that?

I’ve been there in my life where I felt like I had nothing to lose. But I didn’t approach it like that with Josh Faraday. For me, what he had to gain was redemption.

I thought of this character as somebody who was really desperately trying to convince himself that he is a bad guy. So that way, he didn’t have to feel guilty for all the bad things that he’d done in his life, and for the lives he’s taken.

And through the course of this movie, he starts to realize that maybe he’s not so bad, after all. Maybe inside his heart, there might be some good.

Your character is a wizard with cards. If you were a wizard in real life, what kind of power would you like to have?

Oh, man. I always thought it would be fun to be able to shit in someone else’s pants. That would be kind of fun, huh? Someone makes you mad, you just … boom! And you just watch him needing to leave the room, you know what I mean? If I could have one power, that would definitely be it.

Do you know card tricks in real life?

Yeah, I do. I was like an amateur magician as a kid. I have a couple of cool card tricks that I can do.

For this movie, I trained with a magician, who taught me a few sleight of hand tricks. The trick I do with the card (in a scene), I really did it.
